Northwood Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Description of Responsibilities and Duties

  Purpose:  The purpose of the Board of Elders of Northwood Christian Church is to provide spiritual leadership to the congregation, serve as members of the Board of Directors, serve as the Pastoral Oversight Committee to the Senior Pastoral Staff, and to carry out the responsibilities and duties listed below.

1. The Elders of Northwood Christian Church will individually pursue spiritual growth through prayer and study, share their faith and God’s presence with others, and strive to live transparent lives being open and honest with each other.

2. The Elders of Northwood Christian Church will gather regularly for prayer and study for the purpose of seeking God’s will through discernment, wisdom, and sound judgment.

3. The Elders of Northwood Christian Church will strive toward unity as an Elder group, support the mission and core commitments of the congregation, and resolve concerns within the church through open communication.

4. The Elders of Northwood Christian Church will ensure that all teaching at and through Northwood Christian Church is biblically based and promotes Godly relationships.

5. The Elders of Northwood Christian Church will meet with people who are in need of prayer, visit the sick and shut-ins, encourage members to develop and use their spiritual gifts, promote small group participation, oversee special ministry tasks, and provide communion and offertory meditations during worship services.

6. The Board of Elders supervises and oversees the Senior Pastor and Senior Associate Pastor of Northwood Christian Church in the role of the Pastoral Relations Committee.  The Senior Pastors report to the Elders on issues of personal and professional performance, spiritual vision and accountability, and planning for the congregation’s growth and spiritual development.   Note: Annual performance reviews for the pastoral staff are conducted as defined in the Northwood Personnel Manual.  The Chair of the Elders and one other elder will participate in the performance evaluation for the Senior Pastor.

7. Membership:  Elders shall be members of Northwood Christian Church and elected to the Board of Elders in accordance with the By-laws of Northwood Christian Church.  As a member of the Board of Directors of Northwood, each elder is responsible for participating in the Board’s regular meetings and activities, in compliance with Oregon law regarding Boards of Directors of Not-For-Profit organizations.
