Today's scripture:
Luke 3:7-18
1st Sunday of Advent, "Hope" Sunday
John delivers three lightening bolts to his
contemporaries who were awaiting their coming Messiah. As you and I await the
coming Jesus, whether anew in our hearts this Christmas, or expectantly in our
hopes for His second coming…we would do well to pay attention to John’s advice.
1. The first thing John advises for those who wait for the coming Christ
is to beware hand-me-down religion.
2. The second thing John advises for those who wait for the coming Christ is to do the right thing.
3. And the third thing John advises for those of us who await Jesus’ coming is this: Brace yourself.
This 1st Sunday of Advent, John’s message to us is
that Jesus is coming. But He is not coming so you can feel different. He is
coming so you can be different.
